Free home safety checks launched across Wigan to help older residents stay independent this winter
Wigan business PROCare and Age UK Wigan Borough join forces to help local people make small changes at home before a fall happens.
Older and disabled residents across Wigan borough are being encouraged to book a free home safety check as a new local initiative launches ahead of winter.

Step Ahead Wigan brings together Wigan family business PROCare and Age UK Wigan Borough to help people spot potential risks around the home, get practical advice and make simple changes that could help them stay safe and independent for longer.

Launching on World Occupational Therapy Day, the initiative has a simple message for residents and their families: Don't wait for a fall.
Government figures show there were more than 221,000 emergency hospital admissions due to falls among people aged 65 and over in England during 2024/25, equivalent to more than 600 admissions every day.
With winter approaching, the two organisations want to encourage people to seek advice early, particularly if they're becoming less steady on their feet, struggling to get in and out of the bath or shower, or finding everyday tasks more difficult.
Through Step Ahead Wigan, residents can book a free home safety check with Age UK Wigan Borough. The team will discuss their circumstances, identify potential hazards and offer practical advice on making their home safer.

Recommendations could include simple adaptations, additional support around the home or suitable products such as grab rails.
The Home Safety Check and initial advice are free. Recommended products or adaptations may involve a cost, although residents may qualify for free minor adaptations or financial assistance through Wigan Council's existing services, subject to assessment and eligibility.
The check is a practical review of everyday safety around the home, rather than a formal occupational therapy assessment. Residents who need more specialist support can be directed towards Wigan Council's assessment services for equipment and home adaptations.
Pauline Needle, PROCare's in-house occupational therapist, said:
“People often think they need to have had a fall or be really struggling before they ask for help, but that's exactly what we're trying to change.
“As an occupational therapist, I see how something as simple as getting in and out of the shower or standing up from the toilet can become difficult over time. People start adapting how they do things, sometimes without even realising they're putting themselves at risk.
“A grab rail in the right place, a small change to the bathroom or just some practical advice can make a real difference to someone's confidence and independence.
“What's lovely about Step Ahead Wigan is that we're encouraging people to think about these things sooner. You don't have to wait for something to go wrong. And you certainly don't have to wait until you've had a fall.”
Products include towel rails, toilet roll holders and shelves with integrated grab rails, designed to offer additional support without making a home feel clinical.
PROCare's in-house occupational therapy expertise helps inform the development and suitability of these products, with selected solutions available through the Step Ahead Wigan initiative.
David Germain, CEO of Age UK Wigan Borough, said:
“Through Step Ahead Wigan, we’re working with PROCare to help residents identify potential risks and understand their options. Our focus is on what each person needs to feel safer and more confident in their own home.”
