HSBC announced in February that it would shut 27 stores across the country in 2020.

Staff in 10 branches, which employ 46 people between them, faced losing their jobs under the closures, while those working at the other 17 branches would be moved to other roles at nearby HSBC sites.

HSBC has now informed customers that the branch will shut at 2pm on Friday, October 13.

Bank accounts registered with the Leigh branch will keep their account numbers and sort codes, but will be administered from the HSBC branch at the Grand Arcade in Wigan.

Any items being held for safekeeping will be taken to the HSBC branch on Victoria Square, in Bolton town centre.

When the list of closures was announced, HSBC said customers were turning to other forms of banking, such as phone, internet and its app, making them less reliant on visiting a branch.

It planned to invest nearly £34m in its remaining 594 branches this year and refurbish 49 of them, including its Wigan store.
