Wigan International Jazz Festival has attracted some incredible acts, but none left the shop assistants of the town's Debenhams store more incredulous than one Frank Sinatra. Junior that is.

Bearing a remarkable similarity to his more illustrious father, he was one of the main attractions of the 2001 event and indeed the singer who, sadly, died this week at the age of 72, went down a storm at the Mill at the Pier.

But hours before he went on stage he faced a crisis.

Having been greeted at the airport by festival director Ian Darrington, Frank Jnr discovered that his luggage had been mistakenly diverted to Paris.

A hastily-arranged visit to the Standishgate branch of Debenhams where the star picked out a new set of clothes, chatted to the counter girls and paid with his credit card.

Later that week Mr Darrington was talking to a member of the department store staff who said: “Do you know, Ian: there was a man came in the other day and claiming he was Frank Sinatra! He even had it on his credit card. Have you ever heard anything so daft?”

Frank Sinatra Junior suffered a heart attack in Daytona Beach in Florida where he was due to play a concert on Wednesday evening.

When he died on Wednesday, Frank Junior was due to perform at the Peabody Auditorium as part of his Sinatra Sings Sinatra tour, which included some of his father’s greatest hits interwoven with family reminiscences.
