A young motorist who drove dangerously through Wigan streets in a car that wasn’t his and while pursued by police is sentenced

A Wigan 25-year-old who finally admitted to dangerous driving and other motoring offences has been spared an immediate custodial sentence.

Lewis Roberts, of Warrington Road, Ince, had originally appeared before borough magistrates to deny driving a Citroen C1 dangerously along various roads in Ashton-in-Makerfield on June 13 last year.

He also pleaded not guilty to failing to stop for police, the aggravated taking of the vehicle in that it was damaged before it was recovered, and driving without insurance or a licence.

But at a later hearing he changed his pleas to guilty.

Roberts attended Liverpool Crown Court where a judge gave him a 12-month jail term although it was suspended for 18 months.

The sentence also has an 18-month probation requirement and he was banned from driving for the same period.
