The election was been called for a single seat on Wigan council was after the death last month of long-standing member Bob Brierley.

The election will take place on Thursday, November 12 to select a councillor for the Hindley Green ward after at least two people eligible to vote from the area requested one in writing.

Had the requests not been made the seat would have remained vacant until the next set of local elections in May 2027.

Coun Brierley, who was an Independent, represented the ward at the town hall for 22 years, and died last month.

His reputation for community work led to many tributes describing him as “Mr Hindley Green.”

In May this year Reform UK won another Hindley Green seat with its candidate Liam Clarke polling 1,878.

Labour’s John Vickers was second in that poll with 1,172 votes.

Mr Vickers will contest the seat where he lives again next month.

He has previously represented the ward and has represented the borough on the Bee Network board.

Reform UK’s candidate is Bonnie Clarke, who also lives in the ward.

On her election page she said she is “passionate about supporting families, tackling crime and antisocial behaviour and protecting our green spaces.”

Rebecca Shepherd is the Restore Britain candidate.

She came prominence earlier this year when she was the party’s candidate in the Makerfield parliamentary by-election won by Andy Burnham.

Candidates will also stand representing the Greens, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and there is an Independent hopeful.

The result of the by-election will not alter the control of the full council.

Presently, Labour hold 38 of the 75 seats, Reform UK has 25 councillors, with Independents having 11 along with the single Hindley Green vacancy.

A third of seats on the council are set to be contested in local elections in May, 2027.
