Wigan bikers group raise huge amount of money for much-loved member fighting cancer

A charity event was held for Jenny Burke, a 39-year-old care worker from Wigan who has been diagnosed with uterine cancer, with the event raising £1,712.75 of their £2,000 goal.

A fund-raiser was held for a much-loved member of a Wigan bikers’ group who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Jenny Burke, 39, found out she had uterine cancer only weeks ago and has since undergone surgery.

Due to her job as a care worker looking after people with brain damage, she has been told that she cannot work for the next four months and will only get statutory sick pay.

Jenny is part of Screaming Reaper Community Biker Group, which is based in Standish.

Though the group is relatively new, they have become a close-knit and friendly motorcycle club who welcome people of all ages on their weekly ride-outs.

As a result of Jenny’s news, members decided to help by organising a fund-raising event, so that she didn’t have to worry about her finances whilst having treatment.

One of the organisers Lynne Concannon, who sang at the event with her group called Scarlet Roses, said: “I’ve only known Jenn for about eight months but in that time she’s become of one my best friends. We just immediately clicked and became really close.

“We just decided that we would try and raise a little bit of money to help her whist she’s in recovery, because she’s been worrying about paying her bills.”

The fund-raising event was held at the Black Bull Hotel in Standish, which is the regular meeting place for the biker group.

There was a bike ride-out, a bake sale, face painting, children’s activities and the chance to take a photo with a snake.

There was also an amazing raffle for £1 per strip which featured a range of prizes, such as P.Louise makeup, two hampers and a two-hour tattoo session.

The event was originally supposed to be a small gathering, but grew much bigger due to the amount of people wanting to attend.

Lynne, said: “There was amazing support. Loads of people came out on the day and it was a lovely show of togetherness from the wider biker community.”

The event managed to raise £1712.75 of their £2,000 goal.
