Ex-Wigan Athletic loan duo swap Premier League clubs for Burton Albion

Former Wigan Athletic forward Caylan Vickers has joined League One rivals Burton Albion from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old, who spent the second half of last season with Latics, signed a two-year deal with the Brewers.

Wigan Athletic forward off to Port Vale after Shamrock Rovers return.

"We’re delighted to add Caylan to our squad," said Burton boss Gary Bowyer. "He’s an attacking player who will excite our supporters whilst adding goals and assists to the team.

“Having played at this level already, he arrives ready to contribute and we look forward to seeing how he continues to develop with us.”

Vickers has also played in the third tier for Reading, Mansfield Town and Barnsley.

Sporting Director Richard Dorman said: “Caylan is a young player who not only has a lot of potential to develop but also has a good amount of experience at this level already.

"He’s someone who can create chances and score goals, getting him here at this stage of his career is exciting. We are looking forward to helping him take the next step.”

Vickers was signed for Latics by Ryan Lowe, who was sacked less than a week later.

After making his debut off the bench in the 6-1 defeat at Peterborough United – which proved to be Lowe’s last game in charge – he made a further 10 appearances for Latics.

The highlight of his stay came with the opening goal in the 2-0 victory over Bradford City in March – one of only two starts he made for the club.

Later on Tuesday, after the window had ‘slammed shut’ Burton then announced the signing of a second player who spent last season on loan at Wigan.

Australian winger Raphael Borges Rodrigues put pen to paper on a season-long agreement from Premier League Coventry City.

Boss Bowyer added: “It’s great to be able to bring Raphael into the building, we must thank Coventry City for allowing us to do so.

“He is a fast and direct wide player, capable of playing on either flank, so he brings versatility to the group. He also arrives with League One experience from his time at Wigan Athletic, we look forward to working with him.”

Sporting director Dorman said: “The opportunity to bring Raphael to the club arrived late in the window. We were impressed by his performances at this level last season, and his versatility provides additional depth to our squad. We look forward to seeing how he continues to develop and believe he will be a real asset over the course of the season.”

The flyer made a slow start to his Latics career, as he struggled to adapt to a wing-back role that he hadn’t previously played in his career.

However, as he learned his trade, his performance levels increased.

And following the arrival of Gary Caldwell in February, he produced his best form and finished the campaign as a regular starter.

He made 43 appearances for Latics, scoring one goal, and was named in the provisional Australia squad for the World Cup, before narrowly missing the final cut.
