The news came to light on Thursday afternoon, 24 hours after Wigan-born billionaire Mike Danson’s takeover of his hometown club was confirmed.

As a result of the previous owners – Phoenix 2021 Limited – not keeping up to date with their tax requirements, Latics were also issued with a winding-up order by HMRC.

That hearing was set for the end of next month, but it’s understood that will no longer be a problem now Danson has started righting the many wrongs at the club.

It’s expected to be a busy summer at the DW, with the club working towards a far more self-sustainable model.

That will see many senior players moving on, but boss Shaun Maloney will now at least have the freedom of the market to pick and choose which players he brings in.
