The 35-year-old, who twice won promotion from League One with Latics between 2015 and 2019, had made only three appearances this season for the League Two side.

"It’s been a pleasure to represent this club and I’ll be forever grateful for the love and support that the fans showed me from day one," he said in a farewell to the club’s supporters.

“I wish everyone all the best for the future, it is a special club with incredible people working hard every day to be successful.

“It was a big decision for me personally to drop down when I first joined the club and I haven’t regretted that decision for one second.

“Thank you for everything and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Chesterfield FC.”

Grigg scored 42 goals in 118 appearances for the Spireites, after joining them in the summer of 2023.

“I can’t speak highly enough of Will," said Chesterfield boss Paul Cook, who was in charge of Latics when Grigg was sold to Sunderland for £4million during the January transfer window of 2019.

"He has been absolutely outstanding for us at this football club for three years in everything that we’ve done.”

Forest Green are currently 16th in the fifth tier, with 15 points on the board from their 12 matches played.
