Huddersfield Town inflict more misery on Wigan Athletic

Christian Saydee's stoppage-time strike wasn't enough to prevent Wigan Athletic crashing 2-1 at Huddersfield Town to remain rooted to the foot of League One.

Latics were never really at the races in the early kick-off in West Yorkshire, with Town clipping the bar before Joe Whitworth had to make two fines saves to deny Sean Roughan and Joe Low.

Only a phenomenal block from James Carragher diverted a goalbound strike from former Latics Ashley Fletcher, and it was no surprise when Town took the lead just after the half-hour mark.

Cam Humphreys cross was headed home by Ilias Bronkhorst, with Whitworth this time unable to keep it out.

Whitworth then tipped over a header from another Latics old boy in Joe Taylor, who was adjudged to have pushed his marker in the lead-up.

And Latics had another let-off when Fletcher somehow bundled the ball wide from bang in front of goal.

Jon Mellish headed over for Latics at the beginning of the second half, but the visitors were put out of their misery with 10 minutes to go when Derensili Sanches Fernandes found the net with a low finish.

Saydee saw a shapshot smartly saved shortly after coming off the bench, and the big striker did pull one back in the second of three added minutes with a curling drive - but it was too little too late.
