Magistrates sentence a Wigan man following his plea U-turn over a nasty assault

A Wigan 36-year-old who drunkenly attacked another man has narrowly avoided immediate prison time.

Mark Stewart, of Bird Street in Hindley, had initially denied causing his victim actual bodily harm during an incident on July 31 2024.

But before a trial could take place in July this year, he changed his plea to guilty.

Returning to Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court, he was given a custodial sentence of 30 weeks which was suspended for 18 months.

He must also undergo 12 months of alcohol treatment and six months of mental health therapy while paying his victim £500 in compensation.
