Hindley misses out on the final of national railway competition World Cup of Stations 2026
The World Cup of Stations 2026 will announce its winner on Tuesday.
A Wigan railway station has been knocked out of a national competition after failing to secure enough votes.

Hindley station was among 20 stops across Britain shortlisted in the World Cup of Stations 2026, which celebrates the impact of the railway.
It was described as “a vibrant community hub for volunteers, schools and local organisations”, thanks to the work of its award-winning Friends group, while its partnership with Thrive CIC helps young people and adults with additional needs build skills, confidence and meaningful connections.
Hindley was one of four contenders in the North West and West Midlands, along with Banbury, Haltwhistle and Irlam.
Voting began on Monday and people could choose one of the stations from the region to progress to the final stage.
It has now been announced that spot was won by Irlam.
People can now vote for their favourite station to become this year’s champion, with the options being Irlam, Cardross, Brookwood, Yatton and Berney Arms.
Votes can be cast at raildeliverygroup.com/WorldCupOfStations and the winner will be announced on Tuesday.
